Billy Mills
Billy Mills was born on June 30th, 1938 in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He grew up on the Oglala Souix Indian Reservation and went on to run track at the University of Kansas before serving 2 years in the Marine Corps. After leaving the Corps, he qualified the the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He came in as an underdog and shocked the world when he upset the field and won the 10,000m track event. He was the first American to win Gold in this event! His story is memorialized in the movie “Running Brave” (1984).
